National Sheriffs' Association Conference 2024
Title: Utilizing Sheriff-led Deflection Initiatives to Address Community Needs and Improve Community Health
Panel Description
Law enforcement agencies around the country are exploring alternative strategies, called deflection, to promote safer and more positive interactions between law enforcement and people who have behavioral health needs. These strategies aim to prevent future crises and link individuals to community-based services facilitated by specially trained law enforcement officers. This panel will discuss how these efforts have helped law enforcement respond to the unique needs of their communities.
Speakers:
Description: Deflection is a collaborative intervention connecting public safety and public health systems to create community-based pathways to treatment for people who have substance use disorders (SUDs), mental health disorders, and other service needs, without their entry into the justice system.

Tyrina met with the IIR OFR team to discuss with speakers individually on their session for the 2024 OFR National Forum. IIR discussed session content, next steps and help address any questions speakers might have. The OFR team is looking forward to connecting with you and any co-presenters.
Tyrina attended and moderated a session on the Peers Role in Prevention Wednesday, March 6th. The presentation explored the feasibility of police and fire departments mapping all drug overdoses and interactions to provide intervention for help and improve access to services and referrals and pilot a data-driven proactive rapid response team in Winnebago County that aims to prevent overdose deaths. One of the greatest assets of the app is the connection to the Solutions Peer Response Team (SPRT) which is the group of people that answer the "talk to someone" feature.
Tyrina attended the 2024 Fourth Annual Engagement in the Black Community: A Virtual NAADAC Summit on 2.8.24 and 2.9.24
