Estimates suggest that up to two-thirds of youth and young adults who are involved in the juvenile justice system are also involved in the child welfare system. In most states, young adults age out of foster care between the ages of 18 and 21, meaning that they potentially exit the child welfare and juvenile justice systems at the same time.?

In Austin, Texas, team members from all 50-states,?comprising lawmakers, juvenile justice officials, and judicial leaders, convened for a two-day event,?"Improving Outcomes for Youth in the Juvenile Justice System: A 50-State Forum," to build on their recent successes and to take aim at their next challenge: lowering rearrest rates and focusing ensuring youth in contact with the juvenile justice system are being positioned for success later in life.

The Second Chance Act National Conference convened FY14 and FY15 grantees, along with previous grantees interested in attending, with the goal of discussing the latest developments in reducing recidivism and?improving public safety through supporting people returning from prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities. The conferencce featured 200+ speakers, including experts in the field and current/past grantees.

During this webinar, FY2015 Second Chance Act grantees that are developing and implementing juvenile reentry initiatives heard from U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) staff about the Second Chance Act, including grant requirements and management. Following the OJJDP presentation, technical assistance providers from the National Reentry Resource Center (NRRC) provided an overview of the training, technical assistance, research, and tools provided by the NRRC.

Vera is conducting an assessment of NCDPS's use of segregation. This assessment consists of site visits, a policy review, and data analysis. At the end of the assessment phase, Vera will present recommendations to NCDPS and submit to them a final report. Vera will then assist in the implementatioin of the recommendations.

Vera is conducting an assessment of Middlesex DOC's use of segregated housing through site visits and analysis of policies and data. Upon completion of the assessment, Vera will present recommendations on how Middlesex DOC can safely reduce its use of segregated housing and help with the implementation of these recommendations.
