The National Criminal Justice Association, in partnership with the National Governors Association and Bureau of Justice Assistance, hosted the 2017 Institute for State Criminal Justice and Public Safety Executives on December 14 - 15 in Charleston, South Carolina. This event brought together governors' criminal justice policy advisors (CJPAs) and state criminal justice agency administrators (SAAs) to discuss a variety of criminal justice and public safety issues, hear from federal partners, and share best practices. The first day's agenda included discussions about:
- State criminal justice priorities;
- State strategies to target violent crime;
- Technological innovations to strengthen public safety;
- Domestic and international public safety threats;
- Coordinating national drug control efforts;
- CJPA breakout sessions related to the improving criminal justice systems; and
- SAA breakout sessions relating to national updates.
The second day's agenda included a breakout session for CJPAs and SAAs related to challenges, lessons learned and governor's 2018 priorities; innovative strategies for addressing the opioid epidemic; what's next in criminal justice reform; and federal legislative updates.
