The goal of this project is to coordinate with tribal entities and seek solutions that enable them to participate in the National Instant Background Check System (NICS), and provide disqualifying records to related federal systems. Upon completion, SEARCH will provide technical assistance to tribal entities in order to increase the reporting of firearm purchase disqualifying records. JAN-JUNE 2016 PROGRESS UPDATE: Staff worked with the Tribal Assistance Program (TAP) to identify ways to increase tribal involvement with NICS reporting. Working with TAP, SEARCH will develop training and informational materials about NICS to provide to tribes during TAP training events. Staff Traveled to Oklahoma June 2, 2016 to attend TAP Training with Cherokee Nation.

SEARCH staff attended the Tribal Assistance Program (TAP) training session with the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, OK to learn how this program works and how the Firearms project may be able to assist in working with the tribes to increase reporting to NICS.

SEARCH continued to engage with the Tribal Access Program and its tribal stakeholders; responding to several requests for policy and procedural documentation and guidance and participating in monthly status calls.
