American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) through a partnership with the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR), in support of the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Program, hosted a webinar to educate juvenile probation officers, and other stakeholders, on their role in preventing and reducing violence in K-12 school populations.
Juvenile probation officers (JPOs) play a pivotal role in maintaining school safety and supporting at-risk youth. As liaisons between the juvenile justice system, schools, and communities, JPOs are uniquely positioned to prevent juvenile delinquency, intervene in crises, and promote positive outcomes for students. Based on recent insight forums, APPA explored the status of JPO involvement in school safety and provide recommendations for expanding their role in preventing school violence, including the implementation of restorative justice practices. The webinar also addressed emerging trends in school safety from the JPOs perspective, such cyberbullying and dating violence.
