On October 17, 2024, members of the SLATT team and two SMEs provided virtual training to members of the Dane County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office, Special Events Team. The two-hour presentation consisted of a brief SLATT Program overview followed by two lessons from the PROTECT course curriculum titled, “Homegrown Violent Extremist–Threat to Law Enforcement, The Jesse Hartnett Ambush Story” and “The First Responder’s View of the San Bernardino, California, Terrorist Attack.” The training event was focused on HVE threats to law enforcement and communities, with emphasis on the importance of maintaining situational awareness on current threats and recognizing the signs of attack planning activities. Specific areas of focus included an overview of recent HVE attacks; the HVE ambush attack on Officer Jesse Hartnett while on duty on January 7, 2016; and a comprehensive overview of the response to the mass shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino on December 2, 2015, to include threat mitigation, casualty care, the importance of personal preparedness, integrated response, and best practices and lessons learned. At the conclusion of the event, participants were provided with QR codes to download presentation resources and to provide evaluative feedback. Approximately 36 members of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Special Events Team, attended the training. Only one attendee provided feedback and indicated that they agreed or strongly agreed that the instructors were effective and knowledgeable and that they were satisfied with the course, found the information useful, indicated that their knowledge increased, that the course was relevant to their job, that they plan to apply lessons learned from the training, and that they would recommend the course to others.
