We invite you to hear Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH, FACOEM of the Tennessee Department of Health present on the prescription drug epidemic in Tennessee and its effect on mothers and their babies. Abuse of prescription drug opioids is the number one drug problem for Tennesseans receiving state-funded substance abuse treatment services. In 2012, 35% of pregnant women admitted to state-funded treatment services listed prescription opioids as their primary substance of abuse. Not surprisingly, Tennessee has seen a dramatic rise in the number of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) cases. Dr. Dreyzehner will specifically be addressing the issue of NAS in his presentation. He will also share with us Tennessee’s response to the prescription drug epidemic, strategies to reduce the number of NAS cases, and ways that clinicians can help turn the tide on alarming rates of abuse.
