We had two 2-day Blue Courage classes during June of 2014.

How did you and/or your organization use the assistance that was provided?

The SFPD will be hosting a train-the-trainer for Blue Courage this year and has submitted a funding request for 5 Blue Courage classes during the next fiscal year starting July 1, 2015.

How do you anticipate that the requested assistance will address the problems?
The SFPD has had 6 suicides over the past 4 years, with 9 members who have drank themselves to death. This training, in conjunction with mental health support and peer support training, helps officers of all ranks and tenures in the Police Department to accept responsibility for their decisions, to have a vision for the future both on and off the job, and to set clear goals that can be attained through a purpose-driven life. We have 1800 members to train; we know that this class cannot solve all of policing's woes, however, we hope to use this class to build up interest internally so that it is rolled-out Department-wide.
