July -December 2022: TTA will include:
o Implementing training and corresponding resources related to challenging prior convictions as a basis for impeachment.
o Connecting WSOPD with Professors Anna Roberts and Julia Simon-Kerr who have written extensively on the limitations of the use of prior convictions as a basis for challenging witness credibility.
Report is largely complete and currently meeting to design training for Washington state's criminal legal system stakeholders.
January - June 2023: Prior conviction Impeachment report was completed in February and Staff and Professor Simon-Kerr presented at the Washington Defender Association training on April 29. Outreach for training and educating legal system stakeholders remain ongoing.
July-Dec. 2023: Report was approved and planning is underway for a national training as well as content produced on our LMS platform.
Jan-June 2024: Prior conviction impeachment report and national webinar completed June 27, 2024.
