ATF CGICs rely on an ongoing collaboration between the ATF, local police department, local crime laboratory, probation and parole, local prosecutors, U.S. Attorney’s Office, crime analysts, community groups, and academic organizations. In addition, continued review and improvements of the processes along with peer-to-peer networking are key to success and sustainability. To support these objectives, the NRTAC team requests to hold the 5th annual CGIC Regional Training to bring together the FY20 sites as a way to strengthen the CGIC community of practice. The convening includes the following panels and breakout sessions:
• Breakout Session: The Importance of Firearms Tracing in Crime Gun Intelligence – Neil Troppman, ATF National Tracing Center, and Mark Kraft, ATF (Ret.)
• Breakout Session: Prosecutor’s Role in CGICs – Kristine Hamann, Prosecutors’ Center for Excellence
• Panel: Enhancing Community Engagement Through Crime Gun Intelligence - Anna Goedert, Baltimore Police Department; Capt. Clay Germany & Ofc. Paul Cruz, Wichita Police Department
• Panel: Privately Made Firearms (Ghost Guns): What You Need to Know for Your CGIC - Lt. Derrick Lew, San Francisco Police Department; Daniel Garza, Special Agent, San Francisco Field Division, ATF; Daniel Hoffman, Firearms Enforcement Officer, Firearms & Ammunition Technology Division, ATF
• Breakout Session: Use of Intelligence and Follow-up within Investigations – Kevin Armbruster, Lt. Milwaukee PD (Ret.); Additional Facilitator: Capt. Mike Bruin, Indianapolis PD
• Breakout Session: NESS & Crime Gun Analytics – Rob Topper/Christie Weidner ATF; Additional Facilitator: Nazneen Miah, Detroit PD; Michael Malone, ATF
• Breakout Session: Effective Use of the Lab in Crime Gun Investigations – Steve Toth, ATF (Ret.); Additional Facilitator: Jessica Ellefritz, Phoenix PD
The goal of this effort is to provide the sites with the opportunity to introduce the program and create relationships with peers from other CGIC sites.
