At BJA’s direction, IIR and a team of SMEs conducted a pre-visit conference call and questionnaire to conduct a nonfatal shooting and gun violence reduction assessment site visit to support the Wichita PD’s efforts to reduce violent crime by reducing gun violence and enhancing its capacity to conduct comprehensive nonfatal shooting investigations. Prior to conducting an on-site visit to support the assessment, this assessment was placed on hold due to COVID-19 and, rescheduled for September 28-29, 2020 virtually. The NFS SME team and the Wichita PD engaged in two days of virtual interviews, on September 28–29, 2020. IIR then facilitated several follow-up calls during the month of October to gather any additional relevant information. One SME traveled to Wichita on December 3, 2020, to perform an in-person law enforcement-sensitive file review, observing appropriate COVID-19 protocols. The report was finalized in March 2021.
