he Department of Justice (DOJ, Department) is committed to improving the nation’s public safety and response to crime victims; its Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) plays a critical role in changing policies and practices that promote justice and healing for all victims of crime. In 2018, the Department invested more than $30 million in communities across the country to establish and expand services to children and youth who are victimized as a result of the opioid crisis. Partnerships are critical to ensuring our youngest and most vulnerable crime victims are supported—no matter when or where they may access services. OVC is pleased to partner with the Bureau of Justice Assistance's (BJA) Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program (COAP) to bring together multidisciplinary teams and experts that comprise our nation’s critical and integral response to these urgent issues. In pursuit of those goals of collaboration, leveraging strategies and resources, and developing solutions across communities, it is proposed that a two-day National Meeting be held in the Washington, DC area, to convene over 250 attendees to discuss issues associates with children and youth affected by the opioid crisis. The large number of attendees with diverse needs and foundational elements of peep-to-peer networking and community development make it difficult to achieve the intended goals in a meaningful way in any delivery method other than an in-person format.
The Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program is a key part of the Administration's strategy to address the opioid epidemic.
