We?ve set up a phone line for our advocates to answer questions for survivors on specific cases or on the grants as a whole. Our second MDT meeting is Friday, and I have been asked to propose a testing and victim notification plan. The MDT will review this plan and then we will be able to move forward. I?m proposing a pilot sample to begin with, so that we can determine if the proposed process works. First off, SAKI staff will select a number of kits (to be determined by the MDT). It has been suggested that we start with the most recent cases and move backwards, as those cases will be easier to gather information on. LE will then get defendant information to SAKI staff so that we can run criminal histories on all known suspects. We will also look for victim contact information and start working with LE to notify victims about SAKI and their specific case. First contact with victims will be made by LE and a SAKI Advocate in order to determine whether or not the victim wants to have a more in depth conversation at a second meeting (I?m basically proposing exactly what Rebecca Campbell has suggested as well as incorporating the Joyful Heart research). Then we will move to a MDT case review and prioritize the kits using the Kansas SAKI prioritization (all based on the criminal history of known suspects). I know that was a really brief overview, so I?m happy to discuss this process in more detail on the phone. Patti Powers and another Aequitas attorney are coming down for a prosecution training on April 23 that will be mandatory for all our attorneys. We?ve gotten to see the agenda and I?m really looking forward to the training. We are not going to apply for a 2018 SAKI grant because of the timing with me being close to having a baby, and Michele is currently swamped. I also think we will have a much better idea of what we need in terms of funding later in this project. There are people who are really anti-outside testing and some that are championing it. I plan on doing some research to see what our options are in terms of private lab testing in order to make a better plan for future funding than what we could do right now.
