• IIR developed and facilitated a webinar hosted by the National Association of Counties on “Insights from the Reaching Rural Initiative - Navigating Leadership, Innovation and Community Impact in Addressing Substance Use Disorder in Rural Communities.” This event featured three former Reaching Rural fellows who shared information about how their communities are working to address SUD, lessons learned through the Reaching Rural Initiative, and suggestions on how other rural communities can effectively build partnerships and resources to improve prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Discuss the challenges being faced by tribal communities when it comes to successful reentry and reintegration post-treatment and post-incarceration such as economic disparities, poverty, unemployment, and limited access to essential resources. Explore how geographic isolation affects access to services and opportunities. Examine initial strategies to overcome these barriers, including ways to leverage community-based services that engage tribal leaders, elders and communities in support of culturally relevant responses and programs.

Explore the critical challenges faced by tribal populations during the post-incarceration and post-treatment reentry and reintegration process. Examine issues such as cultural disconnection, limited access to resources, systemic discrimination and stigma, substance use disorders (SUDs), co-occurring mental health issues, and other significant barriers.

Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) is a pre-arrest program aimed at redirecting individuals engaged in low-level criminal activities—often linked to substance use, mental health issues, or quality-of-life concerns—toward community-based services instead of arrest. What sets the MCSO program apart is its treatment-based model focusing on accountability to achieve behavioral change.
