The 3rd Annual Ohio Deflection Training Summit (2024) was held from January 24th - 26th in Cincinnati, OH. CHJ will provide an in depth overview of COSSUP first responder deflection opportunities, as well as training and technical assistance support that grantees and non-grantees can get through BJA and COSSUP.

During this reporting period, IIR staff members provided complete logistical support to the following meetings and events:

2024 National Forum on Overdose Fatality Review—March 5–6, 2024. The forum included 21 sessions and 54 panelists. There were 452 confirmed registrations and 320 people attended the event. Attendees represented COSSUP grantees, federal partners, and interested stakeholders. The event was viewed as a huge success and received very positive reviews from participants.

The Deflection Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting deflection programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder, and in some cases an overdose. During site visits, mentors will provide opportunities for observation and peer-to-peer exchanges, including opportunities to observe the law enforcement/first responder diversion or referral program in action and allowing mentee sites to engage with program personnel.

Cloeren, M., & Frey, J. J. (2024, April 23). "At a tipping point: How construction leaders are working to combat opioid related overdose death and making prevention a health and safety priority". Presentation for 17th Annual Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Conference & Expo. Greenbelt, MD. During this training, the University of Maryland team trained construction professionals on naloxone use and distributed 78 doses of Naloxone.

Dr. Jay Unick worked with the Maryland Governor’s Office on Crime Control and Prevention (June 2024) to develop a plan for understanding the implementation of Critical Intervention Teams (CIT) among law enforcement agencies to develop a data collection system to track the number of CIT officers, increase fidelity to best training practices, improve responses to behavioral health crises, and measure behavioral health outcomes.
