This webinar will cover the ever-changing landscape of stimulants and the epidemiology of stimulant use. Dr. Rawson will discuss the prevalence of different stimulants, rural and urban overdose death data, and emergency department visits. He will describe the effects of stimulants on the brain, behavior, and cognition, as well as acute conditions resulting from stimulant use. He will conclude the webinar with an overview of clinical challenges and a high-level summary of current treatments.

Although first responder deflection initiatives focused on responding to community opioid use have historically been started and led by law enforcement, the number of fire and emergency medical service-led deflection efforts has grown. This webinar will highlight two fire departments’ programs in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin: the City of Milwaukee Fire Department and the West Allis Fire Department.

The second webinar of our "Emerging Substances in the Illicit Drug Landscape" will highlight innovative drug-checking technologies that are used in response to the highly variable drug market. Carla Sofronski from the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Network will discuss efforts to expand drug checking through syringe service and other harm reduction agencies.

Across the United States, first responder agencies—law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services (EMS), and community responders—are collaborating with behavioral health practitioners, case managers, and service providers to implement First Responder Deflection (FRD) programs. These innovative initiatives redirect individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and other unmet behavioral health needs away from the justice system and into community-based treatment and services.

Discuss an overview of peer recovery support services (PRSS) as part of a comprehensive program model to support Alaska Natives in recovery. Explore Alaska-specific models of PRSS implementation. Identify the benefits of PRSS as well as common challenges and barriers. Examine important considerations related to building comprehensive intervention strategies to respond to alcohol and substance misuse issues in tribal communities, including PRSS.

Multisector coordination, meeting structure, and data sharing are critical to implementing effective community overdose prevention programs. Overdose Fatality Review (OFR)-Public Health and Safety Team (PHAST) allows for multi-disciplinary aggregate and case-level data sharing, analysis, and interpretation to identify and implement recommendations to prevent future overdoses.

This webinar will discuss the recently enhanced OFR-PHAST framework and how to structure staffing, meetings, and member participation to effectively prevent overdose.
