On May 10, 2017 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. eastern, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) presented a webinar on "New Findings in SPI." Since SPI began in 2009, over 50 SPI projects have been funded to test and evaluate evidence-based policing tactics and strategies. This webinar featured four SPI sites--Boston, MA, Cambridge, MA, Los Angeles, CA, and Rochester, NY--that recently completed their evaluation research.

On February 22nd, the Smart Policing Initiative presented a webinar on "The Benefits of Collaborative Policing."? This policing approach - which combines collaboration with problem-solving and evidence-based policing - builds community trust, support and cooperation while achieving more effective and long-lasting crime reduction benefits.? Hildy Saizow, SPI Senior Subject Matter Expert, reviewed lessons learned from three Police-Community Collaboration workshops held last year, and present seven key principles agencies can put into practice to move toward collaborative policing.

SMEs and CNA conducted initial on-site visits to the Phase VII sites. Visits were made to Milwaukee, Shoreline, Roanoke, Pinellas, Miami Beach, and Phoenix. SPI site visits included a series of meetings and discussions aimed at attaining a thorough update and briefing on the status and progress a grantee's initiative. CNA SMEs conducted visits towards the beginning of an SPI site's project, so that they could establish an effective working and collaborative relationship.

CNA coordinated and participated in one SPI panel and one roundtable at the 2017 ACJS Meeting in March 2017.

CNA coordinated with BJA and SPI sites the submission of two SPI panels for the November 2017 ASC Meeting.

CNA coordinated with BJA and SPI sites the submission of four SPI panels and one roundtable for the October 2017 IACP Meeting.

Last report period, CNA developed a template for TTA recommendations to provide to SPI sites, for consideration and inclusion in their action plans. SMEs and CNA analysts completed this in early 2017.

Last reporting period CNA developed a research assessment protocol to review and assess the rigor of research plans for new SPI sites. SMEs completed this in early 2017.

CNA implemented the online SPI capacity assessment tool with the new 2016 SPI sites.

CNA continued planning for the SPI Phase VIII Inaugural Meeting in May 2017. The meeting was postponed to October 2017, at the request of BJA.
