On BJA’s request, Kerry Yerico attended an internal BJA meeting and presented on the local CGIC project. Ms. Yerico addressed the grant's history and the CGIC model. Additionally, Ms. Yerico highlighted some best practices and success stories from various local CGIC grantees.
Taking Care of Our Own® (TCOOO) is a training for senior fire officers designed to assist fire departments prepare for the worst – a line-of-duty death or serious injury. Fire service personnel and families who have lost a firefighter in the line-of-duty helped develop this one-day course. It covers pre-incident planning, survivor notification, family and co-worker support, and benefits and resources available to the families.

In 1995, C.O.P.S. began offering the highly-acclaimed trainings called “Traumas of Law Enforcement” to prepare law enforcement agencies to provide counseling and peer support following line-of-duty deaths and other law enforcement tragedies such as disability and suicide. An extensive curriculum on death notification, handling a line-of-duty death, law enforcement suicide, the emotionally affected officer, and the disabled officer are all taught at these trainings. In 2019, we began making peer support and counseling referrals available to the officers attending the training.
