Essex is just chugging along. The coaches and the site intended to meet once per month, but twice it was determined that there were no major updates and the site provided an email update.

The site continues to do well. They have accomplished their grant goals - they are simply using the extension to spend down the funds to pay the salaries of the mental health clinicians. The coaches have no concern that they will finish the grant strong.

While this has not been confirmed, it is anticipated that the site will conclude their grant prior to the end of their NCE.

This webinar will review BJA’s RSAT program definitions for the therapeutic community and how the Promising Practices Guidelines for RSAT Programs adds to this definition. The webinar will explore the theoretical underpinnings of the TC and establish the four perspectives used in TCs. Participants will look at some of the more practical theory, including “acting as if” and the role of staff as “rational authority”.

Ethical issues related to professional boundaries are among the most problematic and challenging. Although some issues may seem more clear-cut in correctional settings, others may fall into the “gray area” depending on one’s position within the justice system. This training will provide an awareness and understanding of professional boundaries – what they are and why they are important. It will introduce participants to the concept of the Power Differential and how it impacts the relationships between all RSAT Program staff and participants.

RSAT programs are well aware that substance use is a major health issue among individuals in custody. For individuals with substance use disorders, withdrawal from substances can be life-threatening. Jurisdictions have a pressing responsibility to save lives by implementing policies and protocol that align with legal, regulatory, and clinical standards related to appropriate withdrawal management. Recently released Guidelines for Managing Substance Withdrawal in Jails sets forth best clinical practices and actionable guidance for jails.

The Fidelity Assessment Instrument was developed in order to operationalize the standards set forth in the Promising Practices Guidelines (PPGs). The instrument is divided into the same section sections and components as contained in the PPGs. The instrument scores how programs meet each component as set forth in the PPGs. The outcome of the FAI process is a report that scores how programs align with the PPGs and provides individualized recommendations for further training and technical assistance where gaps or shortcomings are identified.
