A conference call was conducted on January 10, 2019 with members of the VALOR Team and the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Representing VALOR was John Bouthillette, Jennifer Schmidt, and Alyssa Wesolowski. The NYS DOCCS was represented by Darren Miller, Assistant Commissioner/Assistant Chief of Investigations, Office of Special Investigations, John Shipley, and Brian Hilton.
Steering committee members met to discuss site selection, site updates, and new business on September 20, 2019.
Explore promising practices in supervising drug/alcohol-involved probationers/parolees in a community-based setting. Examine the importance of utilizing Risk-Need-Responsivity principles, community-based sentencing options, effective case planning and graduated responses to increase public safety and long-term behavior change. Discuss how stakeholders can contribute to improve outcomes for this population. Discuss the pervasiveness of mental illness in the criminal justice system. Identify basic mental, sociological and educational characteristics of the mentally ill offender population.
CJI staff traveled to Nashville to deliver the JRI Introductory Presentation to both the Steering Committee and the Subcommittee Chairs of Governor Lee's Criminal Justice Investment Task Force.
Interested in a family/children assessment tool for the sentenced population to help drive referrals to family resources and ensure this effort fits in with implementing a more comprehensive, system-wide risk assessment tool.
