On November 29, 2022, CJI staff supported members of the SM6/HM11 Task Force in presenting their findings to the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee in Santa Fe. The presentation included a snapshot of New Mexico’s justice system, an overview of states with unified jail and corrections systems, and explanations of the key findings and recommendations of the Task Force.

In the first week of October, CJI staff traveled to Santa Fe for the fourth and final in-person meeting of the New Mexico Unification Task Force. On October 4th, Task Force members met to deliberate their final recommendations for their report to the Legislature (expected in November 2022). Meeting attendees included representatives of the New Mexico Association of Counties, New Mexico Corrections Department, the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts, the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, and analysts from the Legislative Finance Committee.

At the end of August, CJI staff traveled to Santa Fe to facilitate the third of four total meetings scheduled as part of the SM6/HM11 Task Force Process. Meeting attendees included representatives of the New Mexico Association of Counties, the New Mexico Corrections Department, the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts, the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, and analysts from the Legislative Finance Committee. During the meeting, Task Force members continued discussions around the feasibility of unifying New Mexico’s prison and jail systems.

Over this reporting period, we are working on numerous configurations to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our central Salesforce database. This includes finalizing an automated integration between our new website software, Drupal, and Salesforce to ensure our website automatically reflects auditor contact data, building a robust mechanism for Field Training Program staff to track their post-FTP TTA activities, creating a mechanism to track audit assignments, and many other small changes to ensure the system remains efficient and effective.

On June 8, 2022, CJI staff traveled to Sante Fe, New Mexico to support a Task Force in their discussions of consolidating New Mexico's criminal justice system by regionalizing jails, unifying the prison and jail system, or exploring other approaches to improving efficiencies and collaborations with criminal justice system partners.

On April 13th, 2022, CJI staff traveled to Sante Fe, New Mexico to support a Task Force in their discussions of consolidating New Mexico's criminal justice system by regionalizing jails, unifying the prison and jail system, or exploring other approaches to improving system efficiencies and outcomes. Members of this Task Force include representatives of the New Mexico County Association, the New Mexico Correctional Department, the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Sentencing Commission, as well as some local county managers and jail administrators.
