This was the first session of the community of practice: Behavioral Health Criminal Case Processing:Exploring Person-Centered Justice in the Courts. This community of practice is being coordinated with the National Center for State Courts.

People experience incredibly high rates of trauma prior to and because of their involvement in the criminal justice system. As a result, many professionals working in the justice system are beginning to implement a trauma-informed approach that guides behavioral health and criminal justice professionals to develop practices, services, and policies that promote recovery and avoid re-traumatization. Both culture and individual risk and resilience factors influence how trauma is conceptualized and experienced.

Center staff facilitated a final meeting with the full planning team from West Virginia and discussed next steps to continue the work started under this initiative.
