The Law Enforcement/First Responder Deflection Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting diversion or referral programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder, and in some cases an overdose. Seven sites have been chosen to act as mentors for newer programs that are trying to establish a first responder diversion program.

Grantee Franklin County Sheriff's Office in Massachusetts contacted COSSUP for TTA: "We are in the process of updating CONNECT's Operations Manual or Operating Guidelines. They have not been updated since July 2021. We are looking for best practices or examples from other BJA COSSUP grantees from rural areas as we proceed. We'd like to explore organizing the "manual" using the Critical Elements of Deflection as a guide.

On August 30, 2023, Center staff Karen Otis, Adelle Fontanet, Taylor DeClerck and Fred Bucher hosted a second virtual meeting for the JS-BIT Advisory Board. In attendance were various criminal justice practitioners from the field. Agenda items included finalizing the JS-BIT association terms and initiating the JS-BIT vignettes discussion. Center staff and Advisory Board members discussed in-depth the role of the board in shaping the design of the vignettes.
