On December 8, 2022, CJI staff supported members of the SM6/HM11 Task Force in presenting their findings to the Courts, Corrections and Justice Committee in Albuquerque. The presentation included a snapshot of New Mexico’s justice system, an overview of states with unified jail and corrections systems, and explanations of the key findings and recommendations of the Task Force.

On November 29, 2022, CJI staff supported members of the SM6/HM11 Task Force in presenting their findings to the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee in Santa Fe. The presentation included a snapshot of New Mexico’s justice system, an overview of states with unified jail and corrections systems, and explanations of the key findings and recommendations of the Task Force.

In the first week of October, CJI staff traveled to Santa Fe for the fourth and final in-person meeting of the New Mexico Unification Task Force. On October 4th, Task Force members met to deliberate their final recommendations for their report to the Legislature (expected in November 2022). Meeting attendees included representatives of the New Mexico Association of Counties, New Mexico Corrections Department, the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts, the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, and analysts from the Legislative Finance Committee.

At the end of August, CJI staff traveled to Santa Fe to facilitate the third of four total meetings scheduled as part of the SM6/HM11 Task Force Process. Meeting attendees included representatives of the New Mexico Association of Counties, the New Mexico Corrections Department, the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts, the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, and analysts from the Legislative Finance Committee. During the meeting, Task Force members continued discussions around the feasibility of unifying New Mexico’s prison and jail systems.
