Webinar: Peacemaking in Tribal Communities: Role of Tribal Law Enforcement

The Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI), along with our training and technical assistance partners - the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), and National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) presented a webinar titled: Peacemaking in Tribal Communities: Role of Tribal Law Enforcement moderated by BJ Jones and Brian Kauffman.
On 05-09-24, a video conference was conducted with TLPI, project partner, NAICJA, and Mescalero to introduce Mescalero to TLPI and our Tribal TTA partners and resources and to discuss and review the TTA Needs Assessment. This was the first meeting with grantee, so we did introductions and did a walkthrough of TTA process/TLPI resources. As a note they have 638 Grant as well.
On 04-29-24, a videoconferencing session by zoom with FY23 CTAS PA3 Grantee Burns Paiute, and project partner, Fox Valley Technical College to discuss and review their TTA Needs Assessment. Will then work together to create a work plan.
April 1-April 30, 2024, Monthly Activity; During this reporting period, there were approximately 32 emails, that were sent out to grantee, received from, and internally regarding the TTA Needs Assessment including our project partner FVTC, completion of the TTA Needs Assessment, and scheduling of a follow up meeting to review it.
During the month of April 2024, there were approximately 13 emails and one video conference call, and two phone calls sent to and held with the Seminole Nation. The team worked with grantee to schedule calls for further TTA needs, including TTA Needs Assessment completion and review. The team also prepared for the TTA Needs Assessment meeting with grantee. A TTA Needs Assessment meeting was scheduled and held during this time.
On May 13, 2024 a videoconferencing call was held via zoom to discuss the grantee's TTA Needs Assessment, as well as meeing staff that had not been on previous calls.
TTA Needs Assessment Snapshot Washoe Tribe:
Goals from narrative:
1) Build capacity for the tribal court by hiring two staff members to support court operation.
2) Hire Court Security Guard
3) Hire a court coordinator/office manager to process court documents related to initiating new cases and motions.
During the month of April 2024, there were approximately four emails and one video conference call sent to and held with the Winnemucca Indian Colony, The team worked with grantee to schedule calls for further TTA needs, including TTA Needs Assessment completion and review. The team also prepared for the TTA Needs Assessment meeting with grantee. A TTA Needs Assessment meeting was scheduled and held during this time.
During the month of April 2024, there were approximately ten emails and one video conference call sent to the Washoe Tribe, this also included project partner Suzanne Garcia, who is very familiar with the Tribe for historical information, and recommended TTA (video conference was held with her). Team worked with grantee to follow up and schedule calls for further TTA needs, including TTA Needs Assessment completion and review. The team also prepared for the TTA Needs Assessment meeting with grantee. A TTA Needs Assessment meeting was scheduled during this time but had to be rescheduled.
April 1-April 30, 2024, Monthly Activity; During this reporting period, there were approximately 4 emails, that were sent out to grantee, and internally regarding the TTA Needs Assessment, completion of it, and scheduling of a follow up meeting to review it. One video conference was held to review the completed TTA Needs Assessment as well. During this call some resources were shared with the grantee, and more resources will be shared that are pertinent to tta needs.
