The conference program provides training for all government attorneys involved in prosecuting capital cases: including trial, appellate, post-conviction, and habeas prosecutors. There will something for beginning prosecutors to seasoned veterans. APA previously partnered with AGACL to great success during their summer conference in 2022, and so we are continuing the partnership this year to bring capital case training to prosecutors nationwide.

12th Annual Tribal Healing to Wellness Court Enhancement Training -
The Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI) hosted the 12th Annual Tribal Healing to Wellness Court (THWC) Enhancement Training September 26-28, 2022, with 400 registered participants. Workshop recordings of all Enhancement Training sessions, PowerPoints, and session materials are available at EnhancementTraining.org. The UC team collaborated on a panel at the 2022 IACP Conference, titled “Innovation in Police and Community Responses to Behavioral Health Crises,” to discuss the findings from the national survey of police on crisis response training, programs, and partnerships. Panelists included Dr. Robin Engel, Senior Vice President, National Policing Institute; Domingo Herraiz, Programs Director, International Association of Chiefs of Police; and Cornelia Sigworth, Associate Deputy Director, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The partners hosted a workshop at the 2022 IACP conference, “Building Effective Crisis Response Programs: Key Elements for Success,” featuring Chief Don Hedrick from the Rapid City (SD) Police Department; Chief Nick Hurley from the Corvallis (OR) Police Department; Dan Abreu, Senior Project Associate at PRA; Leigh Ann Davis, Director of Criminal Justice Initiatives at The Arc’s NCCJD®; and Cornelia Sigworth, Associate Deputy Director in the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The partners worked with representatives from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the City of Pittsburgh’s Office of Community Health and Safety (OCHS) to present “Expanding the Continuum of Support: Co-Response in the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania” at the National Co-Responder Conference on June 7, 2022. This presentation highlighted lessons learned in the City of Pittsburgh on the hiring of co-responders and the creation of a cross-organizational infrastructure to support the successful implementation of co-response, crisis triage, and resource referral.

In this program, Training & Technical Assistance is provided by partner coaches with The Moss Group, Just Detention International, and Activating Change. Employees of the partner agencies act as coaches to facilities and agencies who have received BJA grants in FY 19, FY 20, FY 21, and FY 22 for Implementing the PREA standards, protecting inmates, and safeguarding communities. Coaches provide guidance on developing an implementation guide for the use of awarded funds, budget approval, and technical assistance related to the PREA standards and their implementation.

Multi-sector experts will discuss best practices and needs in K-12 school violence prevention that inform future directions. This meeting will support innovative leadership in school safety and help inform best practices for preventing threats and crime.

The purpose is to explore best practices, critical needs, and future supports for K-12 school safety. Attendees will have a better understanding of different areas of school safety, how school safety has changed in the past 5-years, and what people need on the ground to do youth violence prevention and school safety work.
