In the July to December 2020 reporting period, the SWB applications continued to be reviewed by BJA. As such, no remediation was required during this time frame. IIR held ongoing discussions BJA to review the 67 applications and to ensure the applicant selections and denials were consistent and equitable across award decisions. Final selections of subaward recipients and determinations of funding amounts was completed by BJA in January 2021.

Early in this reporting period, IIR continued to enter applicant information into the SWB tracker as applications were received, document application screening information, and monitor application statuses. IIR and BJA leadership held weekly communications regarding the applications and award eligibility. IIR implemented and trained staff members on a SalesForce help desk solution to respond to agency inquiries on the status of their applications and for use in assisting subaward recipients once awards are determined by BJA.

Early in this reporting period, IIR screened all 67 applications for completeness and eligibility, as well as the population size served to ensure that applicants met the program’s 100K population size limitation. Also, per BJA request, IIR screening staff members calculated the number of miles each applicant agency was located from the Mexican border. The screening staff members contacted agencies for additional information to ensure applications were complete or for clarification of the request.

Between June 1, 2020, and July 22, 2020, 67 applications were submitted requesting a total of $5,311.889.18 in funding. Of these, 19 were submitted during this reporting period. The number of applications received from each state were 14 from Arizona, 3 from California, 10 from New Mexico, and 40 from Texas. Of these, 26 were from small and rural counties, 39 were from small and rural cities, 1 was from a federally recognized tribe, and 1 was from a coalition—the Southwestern Border Sheriff’s Coalition.

The site is not able to access county-wide data more recent than UCR data. The site inquired with IACP as to whether this will be a roadblock to their project activities. IACP offered some feedback on reporting standards, and reached out to BJA to set up a meeting with a PMT representative. That meeting provided answers to the practitioner's questions.

To achieve positive outcomes, peer recovery support services (PRSS) to address opioid and other substance misuse are increasingly offered across diverse criminal justice settings, including within law enforcement-based programs. This session:
• Described two police department diversion programs and how they integrate peer specialists
• Identified changes to organizational practices and procedures necessary for the successful integration of peer work
• Discussed training for peer specialists and departmental staff to prepare for peer services
