In 2021, law enforcement experienced a 38% increase in roadway-related fatalities from 2020. Alarmingly, this increase was driven in part by a 100% increase in struck-by fatalities, with 28 officers killed – the highest ever recorded (NLEOMF, 2022). Reducing injuries and fatalities from officer-involved collisions and struck-by incidents must be a top priority for all law enforcement professionals in 2022 to reverse these sobering trends.
In 2019, the Orlando (FL) Police Department (OPD) engaged in a three-year process to realign, redesign, and launch a centralized Crime Center to support intelligence-led policing strategies. Through support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) Crime Analysis on Demand Initiative, OPD worked with IDEA Analytics’ CEO, Dr. Jessica Herbert, to implement evidence-based practices and build OPD’s analytical capabilities.
The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) recently collaborated to launch the Mass Violence Advisory Initiative (MVAI). The initiative aims to equip law enforcement leaders and their communities with expert assistance, guidance, and rapid response resources in the event of targeted acts of mass violence.
The Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program, with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, supports local, state, federal, and tribal criminal justice entities by offering various resources to enhance law enforcement efforts. For example, RISS helps facilitate cross-agency collaboration through the RISSLeads Investigative website. Through this platform, law enforcement officers can interact with one another across jurisdictions to share investigative leads, information, or other issues.
Messaging is an important component of suicide prevention efforts. The way a police agency talks about suicide has a significant impact in preventing suicide and encouraging help-seeking behavior for those who may be in crisis.
