Efforts to improve safety can often be hampered by individual decision-making that has been negatively influenced by organizational culture. Even officers who otherwise engage in safe behaviors may sometimes choose to overlook safety violations committed by their peers. A strong organizational safety culture, with an emphasis on peer-to-peer accountability, is critical to maximizing officer safety. The Peer Accountability for Law Enforcement Safety (P.A.L.S.) model is one simple way officers can strengthen peer-to-peer accountability for safe operations.
