The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys’ Child Abuse Prosecution Project will present a National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This three-day, tuition-free conference will feature nationally known speakers and will showcase cutting-edge workshops for child abuse prosecutors and their multidisciplinary teams. This conference is co-sponsored by the Salt Lake County, Utah District Attorney’s Office, the Western Regional Children’s Advocacy Center, and the National Children’s Advocacy Center.

This workshop, designed for prosecutors, will explore various social networking sites and potential evidence recoverable from those sites for the use in investigations. Participants will learn not only about various techniques that can be used to identify profiles of people involved in the case, but also how to utilize the connections between people to explore more potential corroborative evidence. Knowing what is possible through social media searching will help prosecutors ask the right questions and understand the evidence being provided to them by their investigators.

Digital evidence is pervasive in today’s criminal trials, making it imperative that prosecutors understand the intricacies of computer forensics in order to try and win cases. This presentation covers the fundamentals of computer forensics and discusses the many forensic artifacts that are useful to prove up a variety of criminal charges.

Police and prosecutors routinely encounter people with mental illness and developmental disabilities. Unfortunately, there is frequently some confusion about how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) interfaces with these encounters. This webinar will review the ADA, describe how the law applies to arrests and prosecution, and provide suggestions to law enforcement and prosecutors on how to best implement solutions.

Over the past 30 years, researchers and professionals in a variety of human services and animal welfare disciplines have established significant correlations between animal abuse, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, elder abuse, and other forms of violence. Mistreating animals is no longer seen as an isolated incident that can be ignored; it is often an indicator or predictor of crime and a “red flag” warning sign that other family members in the household may not be safe.

This webinar will focus on how to do an advanced investigation into cockfighting operations. The speaker will focus on state police flyovers, wildlife cameras, surveillance, and other techniques to make a successful cockfighting investigation. Using drug taskforces already in place, he trains them to know what a game fowl farm looks like. The presenter will explore how all the players are involved in an organized pit and how you can utilize relatives to make cases against the perpetrator. He will also explore how to questions cockfighters and get the most out of an interview.

Animal cruelty cases can be tricky due to the evidence, and reporting collateral crimes to other agencies is important. Whether you are dealing with a case involving one animal or multiple animals, it is important to investigate and prepare the case for successful prosecution.

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to acquire images in a forensically sound manner from Windows-based and macOS-based computers, as well as mobile devices. Presentations and hands-on practical exercises cover topics including the digital forensic process, hardware and software write blockers, forensic image formats, live imaging, and multiple forensic acquisition methods. Students gain hands-on experience with free and commercial third-party imaging tools that are currently used by practitioners in the field.

In Brady v. Maryland, United States v. Giglio, and a series of subsequent cases, the U.S. Supreme Court placed affirmative duties on prosecutors, and later law enforcement, to disclose exculpatory information to criminal defense counsel. In this webinar, the presenter will explore the history and evolution of these cases to get to the newest issue being litigated in courts throughout the country: the impact of disciplinary actions against public employees and the government’s Brady/Giglio obligations.
