The 2022 Police, Treatment, and Community (PTACC) Deflection and Pre-Arrest Diversion (PAD) Training Summit was held in Chicago, Illinois on August 2-5, 2022. Nearly 300 people attended (including approximately 100 COSSAP grantees) from 35 sites. Attendees included law enforcement officers and other first responders, behavioral health practitioners, community-based service providers, deflection program managers, researchers, and officials from the local, state, tribal, and national levels.

In April, CSG Justice Center staff were asked to present to Vermont’s House Appropriations Committee on the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, including the Justice Reinvestment II Working Group’s recommendations for reinvestment and up-front investment funding. The presentation gave CSG Justice Center staff the opportunity to reinforce data findings in the state related to returns to incarceration and racial disparities in sentencing.

Priority Area 1: Engage and educate Kansas stakeholders on Justice Reinvestment policies and legislation to promote oversight and sustainability.

Update: In June, CSG Justice Center staff held on-site meetings with Kansas stakeholders individually and collectively to facilitate collaborative implementation work.

Priority Area 1: Engage and educate Kansas stakeholders on Justice Reinvestment policies and legislation to promote oversight and sustainability.
Update: In February, CSG Justice Center staff met with stakeholders from the Kansas Sentencing Commission (KSSC) and Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC). The goals of those meetings were to introduce new members of the JRI Phase II team, discuss ways to move the recommendations from the KCJRC forward, and to determine subaward funding areas.

Update: In January, CSG Justice Center staff met with a range of stakeholders, including the Governor’s Office, Kansas Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and legislators, to provide education on the KCJRC recommendations, research underpinning the policies, and plans for implementation. Additionally, members of the KCJRC presented an overview of 2021 policy recommendations to the Topeka Bar Association.

Priority Area 1: Reconvene the Justice Reinvestment II Working Group to monitor implementation and develop additional policy recommendations for improving post-prison treatment, services, and supervision.

Update: In January, CSG Justice Center staff presented on the results of the racial equity in sentencing analysis to the House Judiciary Committee, House Corrections and Institutions Committee, and Senate Judiciary Committee per the request of the legislative members of the Justice Reinvestment II Working Group.
