This VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Program training, offered as a one- or two-day course, provides officers at the all levels with exactly that – the essentials to survive and thrive – by stressing the importance of being physically and mentally prepared, maintaining situational awareness, combating complacency, and remaining vigilant. Peer recovery support services (PRSS) are increasingly being offered across diverse criminal justice settings to address opioid abuse and achieve positive outcomes. The power and potential of PRSS come from the unique roles that peers play, promoting both hope and pragmatic steps for change. Community Justice Programs (CJP) offer comprehensive case management, support, and advocacy to individuals with behavioral health and substance use disorders at all points of the justice system continuum.

The criminal investigations process is one that begins with call takers and ends when cases are prosecuted. During this webinar, presenter Peter Bellmio will discuss:

• Effective quality control for preliminary investigations and use of preliminary investigation information for case screening;
• Elements of agencywide case management and workload measurement process;
• The development of goals and performance measures for specialized investigative units; and
• Development of plans for gang, drug and vice-related units.

This webinar will provide details and guidance for potential applicants to the Office for Victims of Crime’s fiscal year 2019 Law Enforcement-Based Direct Victim Specialist Program solicitation. The presenter will discuss the purpose and goals of this funding opportunity; review its eligibility requirements and deliverables; and address frequently asked questions. In this webinar, law enforcement professionals and child trauma experts team up to provide law enforcement professionals with useful guidance regarding the challenging task of death notification involving children. Key steps that should be taken will be reviewed and frequent challenges that arise will be discussed. Presenters will share their experiences with this work and respond to questions from the audience.

Victims react to the psychological trauma of a crime in various ways. In order to ensure they receive the care they need, practitioners must become familiar with the impact of trauma and the concept of trauma-informed care. This session will provide participants insight into the surprising similarities of victims and police officers that will help connect the complex thought patterns of a victim in trying to survive the moment and in the long term.

This course introduces the problem of intellectual property (IP) theft and provides tools, techniques, and resources for investigating and prosecuting these crimes. A combination of lecture, discussion, and interactive exercises illustrates the potential dangers and economic repercussions of counterfeit products, as well as best practices and techniques for investigating IP theft. Students are provided with a state-specific workbook that includes relevant statutes, sample organizational documents for IP investigations, and additional resources for investigators and prosecutors.

This is the third in a 4-part webinar series on defining, implementing, and managing a cold case unit. Building off of the past two webinars, “What is a Cold Case and How They are Solved?” and “Forming a Cold Case Unit and Managing Expectations” seasoned investigator, Jason Moran will discuss cold case solvability and present different scientific techniques and tools that officers at all levels should be aware of and can apply to cold case investigations.

This webinar will focus on four separate incidents that occurred from 2007 to 2012, including three first-degree rapes, a first-degree sex assault, and an attempted first-degree sex assault. These five cases were all committed by the same suspect, and DNA evidence connected four of these five incidents.

On behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Institute for Intergovernmental Research is releasing the Partnerships to Support Data-driven Responses to Emerging Drug Threats Grant solicitation. This is part of a series of demonstration projects funded under the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program. These demonstration projects are designed to build capacity, foster cross-sector collaboration, and support innovation. Under this solicitation, up to 6 communities will be selected for grant awards up to $600,000, each for a 24-month period.
