The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center hosted the orientation webinar for the 2019 Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program, awarded from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). In this required webinar, staff from BJA will also participate and provide an overview of the grant Category 2 Strategic Planning For Law Enforcement and Mental Health Collaboration requirements.

TA providers conducted a 2-day site visit August 14-15, 2019. This included a presentation at the Bernalillo County Leadership Meeting?on the goals of the grant and the Stepping Up Initiative, a tour of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Jail and Resource Reentry Center,?and discussion of current screening and assessment practices, and?meetings with the core planning team to discuss grant deliverables, progress, and the P&I?guide.

The goal of this site visit was to go over strategies for counties to reduce the prevalence of adults with substance use and mental illnesses in county jails. We visited the booking area and reviewed the screening process to understand how a person with substance use disorder and/or mental illness is processed through the jail. We also reviewed the current service system for justice-involved populations with substance use and mental health needs, preliminary results from data collection effort, newly implemented re-entry program, and possible approahces to address additional needs.

CSG Justice Center staff conducted a site visit to DuPage County, IL.? Staff hosted the kick-off meeting with core DuPage JMHCP team, conducted a jail tour and meet with Sheriff's Office staff. Staff presented to the county Presentation to Behavioral Health Collaborative. Staff toured the community center and met with health department leadership. Staff also met with post-crisis response team. The site visit ended with a debrief with the core JMHCP team and discussion of next steps.

CSG Justice Center staff conducted a site visit to Omaha, NE to discuss grant deliverables, sustainability, and evaluation. During the site visit, staff had the opportunity to observe the Omaha PD corresponder program by ride-along.
