Around the country, many communities are facing a lack of affordable housing. People who have been involved with the justice system face additional barriers that make finding housing especially difficult. This webinar discusses how to integrate housing solutions into the reentry process. Key topics include identifying people at risk of homelessness in the justice system, coordinating with housing providers, and financing new housing opportunities.

Examine common issues faced by law enforcement and service providers when encountering a person in crisis. Review methods to prevent or intervene in a crisis situation in which mental illness is a factor, including de-escalation and communication techniques. Identify presenting symptoms of various types of mental health disorders. Explore intervention strategies and methods for assessing the presence of suicidal intention. Discuss the lifelong impact that trauma has on individuals such as veterans, children, domestic violence survivors, and individuals impacted by historical trauma.

Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice (MSU) received the 2018 award for Category 1 Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) provider. MSU will work with CNA (Category 2) and NCVC (Category 3) throughout the grant period to provide assistance to the national PSN program, BJA, OLP, EOUSA and any other entity requesting assistance implementing PSN strategies.

Center for Health and Justice and our collaborative partner, the Police, Treatment, and Community Collaborative were asked to participate in a project developed by the Office for Victims of Crime and JBS, International. The project has included producing four deliverables over the course of two years. The OVC/NSP Partners participated in a series of meetings, presenting to the NSP members in addition to OVC grantees on May 11-13th. This was a showcase of these products.

Implicit bias is a key factor contributing to racial and ethnic health disparities. Since implicit biases are automatic and subconscious associations that are expressed through attitudes and stereotypes, they can influence judgments and discriminatory behavior toward particular groups of people. This is dramatically apparent in treatment for drug and alcohol problems for people of color and the prevalence of missteps in providing treatment at potential points of intervention to this population.
