Access Resources in Honor of Second Chance Month

President Biden declared April as Second Chance Month in support of reentry services. Reentry Week will also take place April 26–30, 2021. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the National Reentry Resource Center (NRRC) will host virtual events and resources related to reentry during that week. As part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s e Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation Category 3: Responses to Alcohol and Substance Abuse and Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Training and Technical Assistance Program, the National Criminal Justice Training Center of Fox Valley Technical College produced the webinar “Building Stress-Resilient Tribal Communities.” This webinar discusses factors that lead to stress, the correlation between stress and alcohol and substance abuse, and ways to reduce stress and build resilience in tribal communities.

Webinar – Juvenile Sex Offenders: Navigating Risk of Re-Offending and Treatment

Join the National District Attorneys Association and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center for their webinar “Juvenile Sex Offenders: Navigating Risk of Re-Offending and Treatment” on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. ET. This webinar, geared toward prosecutors, will focus on the evaluation and treatment of juvenile sex offenders in the context of considering risks to public safety as well as rehabilitation of the juvenile.

During the webinar, participants will learn about the foundation of trauma, its impact on the brain, and how to recognize it in yourself and others. Dr. David Wohl of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine will discuss the transmission of infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis C, tuberculosis, and COVID-19, presenting facts and dispelling misconceptions to help prosecutors, law enforcement, and allied professionals understand what they may prosecute or encounter in the field.

Reentry Week (Virtual)

The National Reentry Resource Center, supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, will host information about National Reentry Week on April 26–30, 2021. Reentry topics will include employment, education, behavioral health, housing, youth and families, making reentry work, and the importance of evaluation. 

 

COSSAP Webinar: A Path to Recovery—The Story of a Peer Support Specialist

Join the Bureau of Justice Assistance Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Abuse Program (COSSAP) for their webinar "A Path to Recovery—The Story of a Peer Support Specialist" on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET. This webinar will feature a peer support specialist who will share her experiences with addiction, overdose, and path to recovery. The meeting host will also discuss addiction as it relates to the brain, as well as substance use disorder as a disease rather than a choice.
