The Council of State Governments Justice Center hosted the Second Chance Act (SCA) Kickoff event. The event featured discussions on the state of reentry, the role of the National Reentry Resource Center (NRRC), and the progress in reentry since the SCA's inception, addressing current challenges and future goals. Key topics included the coordination of SCA technical assistance, enhancements to the NRRC website, updates on the NICCC and Clean Slate Clearinghouse websites, and upcoming work under the Reentry 2030 project.

Special Session: Our field has changed, and agencies used to be staffed with officers who had 15+ years of experience. Now, in some agencies, many staff have less than five years of experience. Nationwide, agencies are experiencing high turnover and working with a shortage of staff. This equates to being staffed with individuals who have less practical, relevant work experience but who are tasked with doing it all from the very beginning of their employment.

The PREA Coordinator Working Group (PCWG) will convene for their annual conference July 18- 20, 2023 in Washington, DC. One session will be to facilitate the opening session. This 60-minute interactive session will involve reflection on the accomplishments big and small since the passage of the PREA legislation, where we go from here, and will set the stage for the conference. Another session will facilitate a 90-minute session titled How to Identify, Address, and Neutralize the Misuse of PREA by Incarcerated People.

A staff attorney at the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault is working with an advocate who is trying to assist an inmate with PREA-related issues. IowaCASA has requested four (4) coaching sessions to help their legal team and others who support member agencies with advocacy of incarcerated survivors. More specifically, the coaching will focus on requests made by incarcerated survivors and appropriate advocacy services.
