In this webinar, CSG Justice Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) staff provided newly awarded grantees with an overview of BJA, the CSG Justice Center, behavioral health diversion and reentry strategies, the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP), Connect & Protect (C & P), and training and technical (TTA) assistance. Staff also gave critical context about people with behavioral health needs in the criminal justice system.

In the final session of this Community of Practice, participants came to understand the importance of sharing evaluation results with key stakeholders and how to share those evaluation results to support program sustainability. Participants also learned how to tailor evaluation results to specific audiences by sharing key findings, executive summaries and short briefs highlighting relevant data.

In this webinar, participants received a brief overview of the Sequential Intercept Model, followed by a presentation on ADA requirements by the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. Attendees then heard from current JMHCP grantees who have successfully increased access to behavioral health services across the justice system intercepts.

In Session 3 of this Community of Practice, participants learned how to conduct an meaningful program evaluation even in the absence of an evaluation partner to objectively evaluate program success. Covered topics included designing a program evaluation plan, data collection techniques and data analysis.

Collaborative partnerships are essential for PMHCs to provide safe and responsive service when responding to calls for service involving people with mental health illnesses. Partnering with other agencies and organizations in the community can also connect PMHC programs to potential long-term funding sources. Participants of this session discussed how they can establish these kinds of community partnerships to help ensure the sustainability of their program.

Building a robust crisis system of care requires collaboration between multiple systems and stakeholders. Community-based organizations can enhance existing crisis systems by providing services, support, and lived experience to people in crisis. As the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is uniquely positioned to share the value of community-based organizations to support a coordinated community crisis response.

CSG Justice Center staff attended the Fair and Just Prosecution Annual Convening in Tucson and participated in a panel presentation about how prosecutors can holistically address behavioral health needs in the community. CSG Justice Center staff also discussed the Propelling Change: Prosecutor Call to Action project and used hypothetical case study examples to discuss diversion options for people with behavioral health needs.

It can often be difficult to link people to the housing resources they need during periods of homelessness and housing insecurity. Homeless Outreach Teams (HOTs) are one approach to connect people to tailored housing and wraparound services in the community, rather than using emergency departments to provide crisis intervention with limited capacity for follow-up.
