In September, CSG Justice Center staff met with Alabama Department of Correction (ADOC) Commissioner to discuss his interest in maintaining the support and momentum for justice reinvestment in Alabama by presenting on its success to legislators, associations, and community groups. CSG Justice Center staff worked on a PowerPoint deck highlighting the impacts and benefits that Alabama has achieved through Act 2015-185, comparing Alabama to other states on corrections spending, prison population, and implementing evidence-based practices.
The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles (ABPP) and the Governor’s offfice submitted requests for no cost extensions to allow them to continue spending down remaining subaward funds until December 31, 2017. ABPP originally planned to use subaward training funds for a session of University of Cincinnati’s Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse Training for Trainers. However, a change in pre-requisites for participating in the training for trainers has made it necessary for ABPP to postpone the training until early 2018. The subaward extension will allow ABPP to repurpose the funds to train more staff in Moral Reconation Therapy, a curriculum that the agency has already implemented across probation offices. The subaward extension for the Governor’s office will allow the Sentencing Commission to complete spending on their contract with Applied Research Services to update the agency’s prison population simulation model.
