In August, CSG Justice Center staff continued to engage agency leaders during implementation of Georgia’s justice reinvestment policies, with a focus on the study of the Georgia Department of Corrections’ (GDC) Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) program, early termination pilot, and assessing their capacity-building needs for the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) subaward.
CSG Justice Center staff continued to discuss the possibility of offering judicial training at the January Judges’ conference to strengthen the engagement between the Department of Community Supervision (DCS) and judges to increase judges’ knowledge of evidence-based practices and the goals of Georgia’s justice reinvestment policies. CSG Justice Center staff are working to finalize a judicial curriculum outline that will be shared with Justice Michael Boggs for his feedback and approval. The early termination pilot began on August 1st in 27 circuits and will be implemented statewide throughout the fall of 2017.
In addition to judicial training, CSG Justice Center staff are also working with DCS and judges to possibly incorporate graduation ceremonies into some judges’ courtrooms to recognize probationers’ success in completing their supervision term. CSG Justice Center staff also received data from GDC and Georgia’s RSAT treatment provider to conduct the RSAT study.
CSG Justice Center staff continued conversations with DCS and GDC on the development of the JRI subaward application. CSG Justice Center staff, DCS, and GDC discussed Georgia’s current program evaluation tool and the possibility of using subaward funding to improve it or create a new assessment tool. In the meantime, both DCS and GDC have agreed to pursue a joint public data dashboard and plan to request subaward funding for this project.
Lastly, the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) and CSG Justice staff are waiting on final feedback from the Supreme Court Justice on revisions to the felony probation bench card, which will serve as a reference guide to SB 174’s new policies for all judges in the state.
