In July, CSG Justice Center staff traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to meet with key stakeholders in the judiciary, Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), and Georgia Department of Community Supervision (DCS) to further discuss the strategic implementation of Senate Bill (SB) 174’s policies. State leaders submitted a request for continued technical assistance under Phase II of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI), which was formally approved on July 11th. Accordingly, CSG Justice Center staff began to engage key stakeholders within DCS and GDC on development of the JRI Subaward application by discussing the state’s capacity-building needs during the site visit. Additionally, CSG Justice Center staff and ideas42 planned for the implementation of the early termination pilot with DCS agency leaders, which is scheduled to launch on August 1st. Furthermore, CSG Justice Center staff submitted a data request to GDC’s Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) provider for the RSAT evaluation and discussed the estimated timeline for completion of the data analysis with GDC leadership.

In preparation for the Judges’ conference at the end of July, CSG Justice Center staff incorporated feedback from key stakeholders to finalize the PowerPoint that was presented to those in attendance. The presentation outlined Georgia’s recent reform efforts, highlights from the analysis of their Phase I data on the probation system, and emphasized key policies from SB 174, including the early termination and behavioral incentive date provisions.

CSG Justice Center staff continued to work with the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) to incorporate feedback from judges on revisions to the felony probation bench card that will serve as a reference guide to SB 174’s new policies. Lastly, CSG Justice Center staff published a four-page brief that summarizes SB 174 and its projected impacts.
