January TTA activities included email exchanges between NDOC and Vera about the contract for the SAS Initiative; getting a brief description of NDOC to go on the Safe Alternatives to Segregation website's "About Us" page; the upcoming Board of Prison Commissioners meeting in March; and setting up the first Vera-NDOC meeting via phone.
February TTA activities included the first Vera-NDOC meeting via phone where we introduced ourselves and talked about the initiative, the department and what facilities we might want to visit on our site visits, potential members of a Segregation Reduction Committee (SRC), Vera's data request, and next steps. Additionally, there were email exchanges between NDOC and Vera about: the list of sample SRC members; setting up next phone meeting; a preliminary list of SRC members, some NDOC policies; and an email exchange where NDOC informed Vera of the last of the seriously mentally ill population being moved out of segregation at Ely State Prison (and to another facility).
March TTA activities included:
- NDOC-Vera meeting via phone about the Segregation Reduction Committee (SRC) membership, our data request, our policy review, external stakeholder engagement, and next steps.
- Email introducing Vera researcher Steve Roberts to Dwayne Deal, our key data contact at NDOC.
- Call between Vera policy analyst and Deputy Director David Tristan to discuss the recently revised disciplinary policies.
- A "Save the Ddate" email inviting NDOC leadership to the Advisory Council meeting this summer.
- Vera researcher emailed draft data request to Dwayne Deal, set up a phone meeting.

- Email exchange about SRC membership list, scheduling the next phone call, and providing some policies for Vera policy review.
- Email providing sample language about the SRC's role and membership, for NDOC to use in communicating with SRC members.
- Email from Dwayne Deal introducing Vera researcher to Steven Swabacker and initiating a meeting with him and his staff to discuss the data request.
- Phone meeting between Vera and NDOC, where NDOC provided a substantive overview of the different types of segregation in NDOC and how they are used, and Vera asked questions to gain a better understanding.
April TTA activities included phone and email exchanges with Steven Swabacker, Sheila Cartwright, and others in which we stepped through the data request and they identified what they could and couldn’t fulfill, and from where in their system each element would come. There was a follow-up call and email from Steven Swabacker with map of NV’s data system onto our request.
