NCCJD Director, Leigh Ann Davis, was asked to speak at a forum made possible by a Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) grant, through the Department of Developmental Services (DDS). The focus of 2017’s forum is a continued discussion from the last two year’s forums regarding how to better serve clients with developmental disabilities that are forensically involved.
The 2017 forum is the final forum through the grant and will be focused on providing an overview of how a client may move through the judicial system and to highlight examples of collaborative relationships and effective service models, among community stakeholders, that have shown to be successful in better serving these complex clients. Leigh Ann gave a keynote address to highlight these effective strategies that may in turn be successfully replicated in counties that may not have comparable operational processes in place and to present practical and relevant information to community stakeholders, such as law enforcement, court/judicial system staff, regional center staff, and community service providers, that interface with clients with developmental disabilities, to better effectively serve these clients.
She provided information regarding the Disability Response Teams (DRT) trainings and how this modality is effective in the early stages that a client may experience when they become forensically involved, as well as touched on challenges faced in moving this training forward and solutions DRTs were able to accomplish.
