The presenter will provide an overview of The Arc's National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability, as well as its signature training: Pathways to Justice. While there have been encouraging strides made toward criminal justice reform, often people with I/DD are invisible to the criminal justice system and left out of critical conversations. Police officers need helping identifying I/DD, attorneys need to understand how to provide effective representation and victim advocates need to be aware that people with I/DD are two to three more times likely to be victimized. The hard truth is that no one person or profession can effectively work on this issue alone. Change can happen, but only as communities lean in together to consider their own challenges, brainstorm potential ideas and move forward with a unified vision on how to best assist this population. Pathways to Justice is a training program that provides the platform communities need in order to start a productive and fruitful conversation on challenges they face related to people with I/DD in the criminal justice system.
