In June, CSG Justice Center staff continued to engage agency leaders to plan for the implementation of Georgia’s justice reinvestment policies. State leaders submitted a request for continued technical assistance under Phase II of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI). The request is pending approval from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). In further preparation for Phase II implementation, CSG Justice Center staff continued its partnership with ideas42, an organization that uses behavioral science to design innovative solutions to range of issues, to design and implement the early termination pilot program. Staff from ideas42, the CSG Justice Center, and the Department of Community Supervision (DCS) continued working to finalize the early termination pilot proposal, which is scheduled to launch in mid-July.

To help educate key stakeholders on the policies of Senate Bill (SB) 174, which will go into effect on July 1st, CSG Justice Center staff provided several services to Georgia stakeholders during the month of June. CSG Justice Center staff worked with staff from the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) on a felony probation bench card that will be distributed to judges as a reference guide on SB 174’s new policies. A final draft of the bench card was sent to key stakeholders for approval. CSG Justice Center staff continued to engage Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) leadership on the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) evaluation and finalized an analysis plan. Furthermore, CSG Justice Center staff continued to solicit feedback on a four-page brief that summarizes SB 174 and its projected impacts, which will be shared publicly when finalized.

Finally, CSG Justice Center staff continued to finalize the presentation for the judges’ conference next month and prepare for a site visit in mid-July to further outline the details of implementation, discuss progress with agency leaders, and kick off the early termination pilot.
