In May, the Governor signed Senate Bill (SB) 174 at the 1st Annual Department of Community Supervision (DCS) Reentry Summit in Macon, Georgia. CSG Justice Center staff attended the bill signing ceremony. CSG Justice Center staff were onsite in May to attend another strategic planning meeting with DCS to discuss progress updates, the development of an implementation structure and reporting mechanisms, and next steps in the implementation planning process. Staff from ideas42 accompanied CSG Justice Center staff to participate in a judicial focus group and meetings with DCS to continue planning for the early termination pilot. The purpose of the judicial focus group was to obtain feedback on the implementation of SB 174’s policies, communicate the key role of the judiciary in their implementation, and learn more about how judges see their role and the role of probation to further inform a judicial engagement strategy.
CSG Justice Center staff continued to solicit feedback on a four-page brief that summarizes SB 174 and its projected impacts. After the brief is finalized, it will be shared publicly. CSG Justice Center staff also worked with staff from the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) to draft a felony probation bench card to be distributed at the July judges’ conference. This bench card will outline the major changes from SB 174 and serve as a reference guide for judges.
Finally, CSG Justice Center staff continued conversations with state leaders on next steps to kick off implementation activities and worked with them to draft the state’s formal request for Phase II technical assistance.
