CSG Justice Center staff conducted a site visit to FY16 Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to attend kickoff event. The goal for the event was to engage supervisors and officers in the development process for the JIYA Initiative.
On the first day, the grantee provided a rich schedule focused on (1) familiarizing the team with this population (young adults) through a presentation on Emerging Adult Brain Development by Dr. Eileen Ryan, (2) sharing processes used by DYS through presentations by Bureau Chief of Parole Steve Curl and Deputy Director Ryan Geis, and (3) a presentation on research strategies to be used for the evaluation of this initiative, by research partners Sandy Mullins, BetaGov.
Day 2 focused on engaging the team of officers and supervisors, allowing a space for discussion on next steps, trainings that would be useful (DYS will provide some of the trainings needed), and ideas for the future of the program.
CSG staff debriefed with the grantee and research partner after the event - the team seems very confident and invested in the success of this program.
