During the month of February, CJI started working on developing an outline for the phase I sustainability plan. This sustainability plan will include scheduling and planning for the five remaining risk and needs assessment trainings that have been put on hold. One of the reasons for the delay in completing the remaining risk and need assessment trainings is the need for staff to complete a one-day training on the Principles of Effective Intervention Training which is a prerequisite for the more intensive 3-day risk and needs assessment training. MDOC is in the process of identifying all of the remaining staff who need to be trained on PEI and has reached out to CJI to discuss options for training delivery. MDOC has also reached out to CJI about their interest in a PEI train-the-trainer in order to build the capacity of the department to deliver this training in the future.
During the month of January, CJI and the Deputy Commissioner of Community Corrections discussed the issues with the recent risk and needs assessment trainings and possible solutions to get the issues resolved. One of the issued identified was the fact that many of the training participants have not received training on the Principles of Effective Intervention which is a prerequisite for the more comprehensive risk and needs assessment training. The Deputy Commissioner of Community Corrections is in the process of identifying the total number of staff who need to receive this training and will then work with CJI on identifying possible training opportunities. In addition, another issue was the fact that the Community Corrections risk and needs assessment policy has not been finalized and disseminated to staff. The Deputy Commissioner of Community Corrections has sent CJI the most recent version of the policy with a request for feedback.
CJI started working on developing an outline for the phase II sustainability plan. CJI continued to help with the coordination of the three PEI trainings which were held on June 27 through June 29th. CJI is continuing to plan for close out of our Phase II technical assistance in MS. As part of this process, CJI has been working on recommendations to not only ensure sustainability of the reforms but to ensure that the policy and practices changes, including implementation of a new risk and needs assessment tool, produce the intended outcomes and continue to be implemented with fidelity. CJI drafted an initial list of recommendations specifically related to EBP training curriculum and implementation of the risk and needs assessment. CJI has gone over this list with the Commissioner and also plan to review it with the Deputy Commissioners, as well as other key staff involved in training and implementation of the risk assessment.
