The Illinois Department of Corrections hosted?a Life Skills/Re-Entry Charette.
What is a Charette? An intense period of design or planning activity
What are we designing? The nation's first large scale life skills/re-entry program in an institution setting.
What has IDOC done on the Life-Skills/Re-Entry Program to date?
1. Identified Kewanee Correctional Center and Logan Correctional Center as our two pilot sites.
2. Identified, in broad terms, a program structure and objectives.
3. Established that these life skills/re-entry programs will be designed using evidence-based practices, and that they will be rigorously evaluated to ensure fidelity to the design and gauge impact.
4. Established that the Life Skills Re-entry Program will be voluntary.
What is expected of you when you attend the Charette?
5. Your ideas on how to make the Life Skills/Re-entry Program impactful and improve IDOC outcomes.
6. Your opinion about what are the most important programs/skills a returning person should have when he or she are released from the IDOC.
7. Your thoughts about differences in programming needs for males/females and depending on the point of geographic reentry.
8. Your thoughts on the optimum program length in a corrections setting.
9. Any other suggestions you have about the Life Skills Re-entry concept.
The bottom line: IDOC wants your ideas, knowledge, experiences and commitment to help us improve our outcomes.
The ultimate goal: To positively impact the participant, their family and community so that fewer people return to prison, victimization is reduced and our communities are safer.
