As part of additional quality improvement efforts, the PRC administers peer reviews which entails selecting strong auditors to review audits that have already been completed to ensure a high quality audit process. (I.E. retaining necessary documentation, investigating PREA complaints properly, facility implementation of PREA Standards etc).

Impact Justice staff completed an analysis of the findings from the peer review pilot, and produced briefing materials with recommendations for BJA staff. Staff also convened and facilitated a 2 day planning and discussion meeting regarding next steps on December 6-7 with the PREA Management Office.
Beginning October 1st 2016 (When Impact Justice began fully operating the PREA grant), there has been 1 peer review pilot administered in the quarter; ending December 2016.
The Audit Quality and Integrity Division (AQI) provided peer review training to ten (10) peer reviewers utilizing a webinar format. Two trainings were provided; one training was conducted in a one-day format and the other training was conducted in a two-day format. Each training was approximately 6.5 hours in length and covered a large volume of training materials, review tools and instructional scenarios. The trainings were conducted on November 3, 2017 and November 20-21, 2017.
The Audit Quality and Integrity Division (AQI) will implement decisions and guidance of the PREA Management Office (PMO) regarding the second round of peer review. Once this project is approved to move forward, based in part on the project report for round one of peer review (2017), AQI will develop the training manual, curriculum and review tools (e.g., scoring rubric, narrative guidance, revised checklist of documentation, interview checklist). Materials and tools from round one of peer review in 2017 will be modified and enhanced for the 2018 peer review.

Once this project is approved to move forward, based in part on the project report for round one of peer review (2017), AQI will finalize the selection of peer reviewers for the second round.

AQI conducted a meeting with the PREA Management Office (PMO) in the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) along with PRC leadership to discuss the findings of the first round of peer review held in 2017. This meeting will share key data from the peer reviewer's work and solicit modifications and enhancements to the review process and review instruments for the second round in 2018.
