People with I/DD face grave disadvantages when it comes to criminal justice involvement, as both victims and suspects/offenders. While they encounter discrimination as crime victims (testimony viewed as not credible as one example), they also experience indifference or discrimination as suspects/offenders (for example, when persuaded to confess to crimes resulting in needless, often traumatizing, arrests and confinement). Another emerging issue is the inappropriate use of force by police against people with disabilities; presenters will provide ideas/messaging about how chapters can respond. Participants will also learn about NCCJD’s Pathways to Justice® Program, The Arc of Aurora’s new law enforcement training videos, and other helpful tools advocates can use before, during and after someone with I/DD becomes involved in the criminal justice system.
